It's hard for the traditional school community to imagine how a homeschool education might work especially when you get to thinking about high school. Frankly, most parents have trouble remembering any of their high school math. Surely, their children should be in the hands of professionals to drag them through the agony of high school! (Irny intended!)
Well, right and wrong. The fact is that most parents of home schooled high school students do very little class instruction themselves. What they do do is orchestrate a program which is usually made up some junior college courses, some online courses, some coop homeschool courses, and some independent study. Florida Virtual School for instance is now very supportive of having homeschoolers take just a few courses from them as part of an overall homeschool highschool experience.
Many parents are excited about the summer 2013 announcement that Time4Learning will be providing an online high school program.
The best website, resource center, and community to help people think about home schooling highschool is called: Letshomeschoolhighschool.com. They have sections for students and for parents. They also have resources both for highschool and also, mucho information on post highschool options.
Another place to discuss homeschooling which is non religious is Secularhomeschool.com. Another idea is to take some writing courses for highschool students from Time4Writing.
