Homeschool Vocabulary Skills

There are many ways for students to learn vocabulary. First and chief among these is for the family to provide a language rich environment in which conversation, intelligent conversation, is constant and valued. From the first week, children should be spoken to and they should hear their family engaging in conversation. I don't mean the TV, the people should be talking.< /br> A family that engages in fun word games and puzzles and discussions is part of this. Kids need to learn phonemic awareness and phonics. This starts with a smile understanding that words are made up of sounds. This is the rationale behind all those rhyming games such as Hink Pink. To understand more about how kids acquire language and reading skills, read about the Reading Skills Pyramid.

Of prime importance, as the kids reach the ages of 5-7, is start on a systematic tracking and teaching of phonemic awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading, reading comprehension, and reading fluency.  There are many approaches to this but one reading program online that covers it all is Time4Learning.

A specialized service to build vocabulary and spelling skills is VocabularySpellingCity.com. They have many great teaching resources and learning games for this.< /br> Word Search, Unscramble, Hangman (HangMouse), Crossword Puzzle, and Word Find. VocabularySpellingCity is very useful for working on word study. Highly recommended vocabulary Teacher Resources are analogies, dolche words, compound words, math vocabulary, and science vocabulary.

In high school, in addition to testable skills and knowledge, students should. Have the room and stimulation to develop interests, ambition, and creativity.  I heard for the first time last week, HSMP ( home school me please!), a cry by some high school students for freedom from regimented schools and a chance to do something on their own.

Lastly, I've spent some time recently talking to some Spanish speakers who are looking for some flexible tools to help them with their particularly problems in learning English vocabulary.  For instance, I just read: http://ingles-cada-dia.blogspot.com
